#HFS2018

I started this Blog when I first started working with the North Lake College Summer Hawaiian Field Studies course. I knew that in 2 weeks, I would learn so much and I needed a place to document it. I was right. I went back through my pictures when I got home and thought, "Did we stop here? I don't remember this!". So I went back to my Blog and was reminded of that moment. So many great moments, so many great stories...here is where I document them. Please read, enjoy, send me questions, comments, etc.

I will be streaming live using Periscope on my Twitter Page. Follow me @Laronna_D on Twitter and @ldoggett on Instagram

Day 2 - The Bishop Museum and Hanauma Bay

I lost my first draft, so here goes...

The Bishop Museum - not to be confused with the Bishop's Palace.  Those that are familiar with Galveston will understand.  I want to call it Bishop's Palace.  Anyway, we first went into the Planetarium and learned how to navigate with the seasons and the stars.  Interesting, but not for me.

Second, we had a behind the scenes tour through the Ichthyology Building.  It was incredible.  This is the 3rd largest preserved collection of fish in the US with over 40,000 specimens.  I could have spent hours looking at all of the fish.  No pictures were allowed.  Boo.

Third, we visited the Entomology building to look at some of the bugs.  There were small ones, large ones, huge beetles the size of a small/medium hand., and some beautiful butterflies.  It was crazy!  These buildings are considered a type of library where scientists can come and use for research and comparison.

Last, we went to the Educational Building and learned a lot (well, I was supposed to) about volcanoes.  They also had some Hawaiian Natural History information - much more interesting.  There were a few things to play with.

All-in-all, pretty cool stop.

Hanauma Bay - SNORKELING!!!  There were all sorts of fish there.  There were some that I had not even seen before.  Great protected area for snorkeling.  The hot topic was box jellyfish.  We were to be on the lookout for these delicate and clear killers - well, not like the ones in Australia, but can set you back a few days.  Apparently they come in 8-10 days after a full moon...we were snorkeling there on day 9.  Yippee!  No one saw one and no one got stung...wheu.

For you Carrie:

When we got back, we went to eat at a place called the Shore Bird.  This is one of those places that you order your food and then they bring you the meal uncooked and then you cook it yourself.  Pretty fun and right on the beach.

On the way back from dinner, my suspensions were confirmed that we saw a "lady of the evening" on the walk back to the hotel.  Day 2 - saw a man do a U-turn and make a deal and the lady was there again on this evening...plus 2 more.
