#HFS2018

I started this Blog when I first started working with the North Lake College Summer Hawaiian Field Studies course. I knew that in 2 weeks, I would learn so much and I needed a place to document it. I was right. I went back through my pictures when I got home and thought, "Did we stop here? I don't remember this!". So I went back to my Blog and was reminded of that moment. So many great moments, so many great stories...here is where I document them. Please read, enjoy, send me questions, comments, etc.

I will be streaming live using Periscope on my Twitter Page. Follow me @Laronna_D on Twitter and @ldoggett on Instagram

Day 3 - On to the Big Island

Well, where do I begin.  Oh yes.  At 2:45 AM to get on the bus by 3:30 AM and catch our 5:55 AM flight.  Yikes.  Dinner at the Shore Bird was great, but by the time we got back and I re-packed, it was close to midnight.  I have been running on about 3 hours of sleep all day.  Today's Blog will be short and I will elaborate tomorrow.  I need some sleep!

The day got off to a rocky start when a student fell ill and had to go to the ER.  She is better and spent the second 1/2 of the day with us - moving slowly, but moving.

The first hurdle after that was to get ALL of the bags back to Uncle Billy's Hilo Hotel and then all of the students.  Then, we had to wait to see what we were going to do since we had one student at the ER with one of the teachers.

We decided to go ahead and go to Volcanoes National Park.  We will be back there tomorrow to see more and learn more.

My favorite plant in the Botany lesson is a highly invasive one, but so pretty... known as the Purple Plague, but still beautiful!  It real name is the Purple Glory Bush.

I dozed for a second while this pictures was uploading, so it is time to say good night and I will wright some more tomorrow.  Hopefully, I can start figuring this Geology stuff out...yuck!

Well, it is 6/19, and I finally have time to come back to this.  The Big Island was fast and furious with long days.

To the best of my knowledge, this is a collapsed caldera that I am standing in front of.  I would like to explain it, but I am still not positive what it is.  I hear the term a lot, so I should, but I geology is pretty pathetic.  I do know that it is smoking, there is sulfur that comes out, sulfur can bleach the rocks because of the sulfur and water mixing to create sulfuric acid.
