#HFS2018

I started this Blog when I first started working with the North Lake College Summer Hawaiian Field Studies course. I knew that in 2 weeks, I would learn so much and I needed a place to document it. I was right. I went back through my pictures when I got home and thought, "Did we stop here? I don't remember this!". So I went back to my Blog and was reminded of that moment. So many great moments, so many great stories...here is where I document them. Please read, enjoy, send me questions, comments, etc.

Day 7 - Activity Day

I'll come back to this.  I am done catching up for now.  Here are the activities and stories will follow:

Hidden Falls - This trip started by Kayaking to a random trail.  We walked and walked and walked.  We went up a cliff side and then (finally) we came to the realization that we were no longer on the trail.  We went back down and then found the trail marker.  We found the path and within minutes were at the waterfall.  I was totally exhausted, but when I got in the freezing cold water and was pounded on my the waterfall, I was invigorated!   I really felt like I was in Hawaii.





Nap - Ah yes.  We were supposed to be back from the Kayaking trip by 12, but one Kayak got a little lost. I waited until 1:30 for them and they were crispy from the extra time in the sun.  I drove them to get lunch and then to get ice cream...then it was time for the nap! I got a shower and then a nap.  Next activity...

Luau - Fun time at the Luau.  They started by taking us around the property and showing us all of the birds. There were a lot of peacocks wandering around.  And because it was on the island of Kauai, there were a lot of chickens.  As we walked in we got lei-ed as we walked in.  No pretty flowers, but some pretty shells.

6 PM - Imu Ceremony - Here we learn about the cooking of the pig.  They were very careful to let us know that it is not a wild pig from the island, but a pig raised for the sole purpose as to be used in the Luau.  The cooking technique is called Kaula - this is where the Kaula pig is wrapped in leaves and cooked in the Imu oven.




6:30 PM - Luau - let the feast begin.  I even try Taro-Poi.  Disgusting!  But I did try it.  It is the purple goo in the plastic cup.  They had also added rice pudding in pots in with the pig and cooked it that way.  I did eat the rice pudding.  It was OK, but I did not eat the whole thing.

8:00 PM - Rhythm of Aloha Show.  They go through the different cultures that make up Hawaii's history.  At the end, there was a flame twirler.  It was a neat show.  The pictures did not come out too well because there was not a lot of light.
